After LOTS of changes, I'm happy to be back to By Gosh By Golly!

In a nutshell, it took me a long time to recover with that bout of flu in 2009. Granted, it was only about 2 weeks (not a year and a half), but it really through me off.

Since then, I've bought a house, remodeled that house, fallen in love, had my heart broken, closed my store, moved into that remodeled house and started a new business! Needless to say, I was delighted to say goodbye to 2009-2010 and elated to say hello to 2011!

My blog hasn't changed much... just my life. I'll still be posting about what interests me, what jobs I'm working on (HINT: interiors) and fun products that I find along the way.

I hope you'll stay tuned.

Les Mondial de Nathalie Lete

You might recall that I went to Boston recently. I posted a few pics of what I saw, but failed to mention a trip to Anthropologie that catapulted me into a frenzy of research. A brief account into my investigative reporting follows...

While in Anthropologie, my sis found these adorable pink hand towels with the Eiffel Tower on them. We both scurried to find larger ones, but to no avail. They weren't made. She still got them for her girls' bathroom.

"Chat Chien" is at the bottom of the design, but the label is in Japanese. A search on Google didn't bring up anything with the information we had, so I knew there must have been something we were missing.

I was back in San Antonio, my sis in Boston, but I couldn't stop thinking about these towels. A visit to my local Anthropologie proved fortuitous as they had one remaining Eiffel Tower hand towel. I immediately purchased it, as well as a bird design. An adorable Paris plate that I couldn't resist (perfect for cookies) also found it's way into my bag. Upon further investigation, I discovered that they were all by the same designer!

After much searching (and subsequent purchasing), I am pleased to tell you about Nathalie Lete. Though she is new to me, I was, admittedly, slightly disappointed to find that she is no newcomer to the design scene. (I thought I had come upon an undiscovered gem! Design*Sponge and Decor8 are among the many that have already written about her.) Nonetheless, I felt a sense of accomplishment for having tracked her down.

Lete lives and works in Paris (oh to live and work in Paris). With the City of Light as her backdrop, she's got an endless amount of inspiration, but also looks to her travels and vintage toys (which she also collects).

Check out some shots of her workshop. It's like a craftster paradise.

She works in several different mediums including illustration, ceramics, textiles and paintings and from what I can tell, her creativity doesn't stop. I'd love to live in les modial (the world) of Nathalie Lete!

As you can tell from my blog, there are several things that make my heart go pitter-patter. But if I had to narrow it down to my Top 5 - only including the things that make my heart really sing - Paris would certainly be included on that list.

I think about Paris all the time. How wonderful it would be to live there. To work there. To vacation there (often). Unfortunately, the likelihood of any of the aforementioned coming true doesn't seem realistic at this point in my life but I can still dream (sigh).

That said, I was fortunate enough to have visited a couple of years ago. Despite the time lapse, my trip still seems so fresh. The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Pompidou, the Seine, museums, quaint cafes, Montmartre, the Left Bank - heck, the Right Bank. And walking. Just walking.

A similar love affair with Paris is shared by so many. That's why I thought I'd bring you some of Paris, France and all things French. So, this week, you can look forward to blurbs about French designers/artists, French companies or just things that look or feel French. Obviously, with only 5 days in a week, I won't even be skimming the surface, but hopefully I'll bring you something that's interesting and enw to you. I'd better hurry, though. (It's already Monday!)

{Fashion Friday} Staying A-head

What happens when two stylists from LA come together? Well, I suppose a lot can happen, but in this case, I'm referring to a pair who is - shall we say - ahead of the game.

In 2008, friends and co-workers Jen and Jamie started ban.do. Inspired by vintage pieces and girly touches, they use feathers, rhinestones, brooches and ribbon to create masterpieces for the head.

Because of their immediate success with their head bands, they now offer several different styles for other feminine areas of your body including your neck (collars), chest (corsages) and waist (belts). And with funny names like "she likes drama" or "pink hotness" (a personal favorite), they are hard to resist.

If you are a pending bride, make sure and check out their bridal selection. Otherwise, throw one on for a night on the town. I imagine you'll be turning a few - ahem - heads.

Pop Goes the Placemat

I love all things pop up. I actually collect pop up books, a hobby which started not too long ago with one of Robert Sabuda's Christmas treasures. I must have 25 or so pop up books now, none of which are terribly old, but I'm still proud of my growing collection.

That's one reason why I'm also a huge fan of Publique Living's pop up placemats. Yes, you heard me. Placemats! I first saw them last year, but was thrilled to see their beautiful, new designs.

Dinner will never be the same.

These have been in style for a couple of years, but I never grow tired of looking at them or dreaming about having one. Moroccan poufs make a nice design statement, provide extra seating (for a hiney or a pair of feet) and don't take up too much room. (They come in various materials, sizes and prices so make sure and do your research before purchasing one.)

Take A Dip

When we were kids, my grandmother would swim laps at Barton Springs in Austin, Texas during the summer. (Barton's is a famous pool fed from under ground springs. It averages 68 degrees year round and attracts all sorts, the likes of which include conservative legislators as well as old hippies who prefer to sunbathe in the buff.)

In her better years, Tootie would get her big-bosomed, petite figure in the frigid water to do her exercise. Her large, white, teased, bubble hairdo (pinned in the back with black bobbie pins, but still round and ever visible on top) would bob up and down as she scooted length to length doing the breast stroke. She was careful never to get her hair fully wet as this would require an additional trip to the beauty parlor (where she was already a faithful patron once a week).

I was reminded of my grandmother when I saw these images. Despite having no facial features, these women (and girl) all appear to feel comfortably relaxed and happy, much like my grandmother did when she came out of the water.

20x200 brings artists together with buyers. Unlike traditional galleries, though, where art can cost several thousand dollars (and hardly affordable for your regular Betty like me), 20x200 keeps things on a cost-conscious level without sacrificing innovation, expression and creativity.

Jen Beckman, a gallery owner in the Lower East Side of NYC, developed the concept. When she first launched 20x200, the smallest size was reprinted in the largest batch – an edition of 200 – and sold at the lowest price – $20. Hence the name 20x200. Most images are now available in three sizes (which vary somewhat according to each artist). The bigger you get, the higher the price goes.

As I browsed the wonderful gallery of images, I came across a few that resonated with me.

You can purchase these (and other great prints) from here, but hurry. Pieces from 20x200 are only produced in limited quantities for a limited time (once they are gone, they are gone). New editions go online every Tuesday and Wednesday at 2 pm EST so check back often.

A New Series: {Fashion Fridays}

Given my interest in all things fashionable, I thought I'd launch a new series entitled "Fashion Fridays." From here on out, I will use Fridays to post something having to do with - you guessed it - fashion.

Short Cuts

Have you ever wondered where the short films at the Oscars come from? Have you ever wondered where they go after they've been nominated and/or won? Furthermore, have you ever been disappointed that you've never seen them? If you answered "yes" to any or all of the above, you are not alone.

While I can't give you any answers to those questions, I can tell you that last night, I was lucky enough to have seen 8 of the 10 nominated shorts from 2009. No, Joan Rivers wasn't there asking people what they were wearing (I was in Corey Lynn Calter in case you are curious), nor was there a red carpet filled with celebrities and paparazzi. But as a movie buff, I was delighted to have been amongst the crowd who got to see them.

Hailing from all over the world (Germany, Ireland, Denmark), and varying in length and format (animated and live action), these little morsels were thoughtful, tender and well done.

The bad news? You likely won't be able to see these in a theater, the way they should be viewed. The good news? Some of these movies are now available on iTunes (search under "Movies" and then "Short Films"). A list of all 10 of the films that were nominated in this category is listed below:

The longest one was 30 minutes, so even if you only have a few moments to spare, it'll be well worth your while. I HIGHLY recommend viewing them.

Give Me the Names of Four Boys...

If you are my age (or close to my age), you'll remember the finger-operated fortune telling devices that we made out of notebook paper and then read on the playground.

After the tool was laboriously created (making sure that it was perfectly creased and folded), the "customer" would choose a handful of boys names, dwelling types, numbers and cities. The "fortune teller" would then insert the data into her folded hand-held device and the game began. After a series of back and forths, folds and unfolds, a final declaration was made: you will marry Trey P., live in a shack, in Paris, and have 26 kids.

Well, thanks to Sycamore Street Letterpress (and Design*Sponge who first posted this little lovely), you don't have to be on the playground anymore to enjoy such trivial fun. Thankfully, though, they've taken it to a new level.

I mentioned most of the details from our fun trip to the Point Theatre in Ingram, Texas on Monday, but I saved the best for last: the gift shop. It was a totally unexpected little treat.

The Hill Country Arts Foundation has tapped into an obviously able group of ladies who donates their time to crochet blankets, pin cushions, potholders, pot scrubbers (deemed 'the best in Texas') and various chotskies. These goods are then sold in the gift shop where profits go to help supporting the theatre and arts center. Check out some of the gems:

Crocheted granny square blankets and potholders are certainly not new to the market, but it seems like more and more are trying their hand at modern applications of the craft. There is a point in the Texas Hill Country, amidst tall trees and a lovely landscape, where a part of Johnson Creek merges with the Guadalupe River. Welcome to Ingram, Texas. It is here that a small group of friends, united by their love of this environment and their appreciation of the Arts, created a place for arts education, performance and exhibition some 50 years ago.

Today, the Hill Country Arts Foundation is a thriving organization. With regular theatrical performances, as well as art exhibitions and workshops, this is a place where families and friends converge to enjoy and/or participate in the creation of visual and performance art.

Part of what makes the HCAF particularly appealing is the outdoor amphitheatre. The Smith-Ritch Point Theatre sits right on the River and the setting is beautiful. During the warmer months, regular performances are held, many of which are kid-friendly. (When the weather cools off, performances are taken inside to the Elizabeth Huth Coates Theatre.)

Last week, my parents and I took the GrayBear to see a performance of "Treasure Island." Check out some of those shots:

I have to say, I was impressed with the sets, the costumes and the performances of all involved. Plus, the snack bar is innocently delightful. In addition to the two adorable kids that were selling candy on the side, there was plenty of cotton candy and popcorn to enjoy.

Despite the intense and sweaty heat (even after the sun went down), it was such a fun outing and I highly recommend it.

Balloons always add a nice touch to birthday celebrations as long as (and here, I reveal my snobby design side) they are presented in a creative fashion.

Decor, Decor and More Decor

Today is Day 3 of Birthday Week. We started off with a funky birth announcement on Monday. Yesterday, I reviewed some snazzy cake ideas and today, I thought I'd bring you some suggestions for decorating for a big bash.

There are so many things out there - especially for a theme-y birthday. (You may have noticed that I skipped the themes altogether.) I chose to make things a little more homemade - a little more focused on hosting a party at your house, for example - while still adding a special touch.

1) How adorable is this 'Happy Birthday' banner. Drape it on the wall and voila - you've got yourself a wonderful DIY sign. (Or you could just purchase it here and still have the DIY look without actually DIY-ing it.) 2) Draped under a doorway, felt garland is festive and fabulous. It's also easy to make (in theory, that is... it looks like it could take a lot of time). Why not purchase this one here? (It's on sale, too.)

3) I like to honor special guests with an altar that I've created. (I did the one depicted above for my grandparents during Day of the Dead, but my Mom always did a living altar for me and my sibs for our birthdays.) Include all things that remind you of that person: rememberances of what they love, what they do, who they are. Make sure and load it up with plenty of flowers and candles, too.

4) Gotta love confetti (though it's a bitch to clean up)! Rock the floors, tables and counters with tiny "Happy Birthdays." 5) Following on the DIY road, top off the event with homemade bday hats for everyone. Martha Stewart created those above, but I feel like it would be easy to simplify some steps. HINT: Hats at everyone's place around the table can also serve as placecards. 6) and 7) add a light and colorful touch. Hang a bunch these chinese lanterns or indian stars from the ceiling with string and a nail.

Have Your Cake and Eat It, Too

As we continue on with Birthday Week, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about The Cake! And oh... there are so many delightful options out there from which to chose.

Le Cake
1) Naturally Nora (via DailyCandy) is an all natural cake mix (okay, so it would only be halfway homemade). She has a fun yellow cake mix with bits of color. 2) The book "Birthday Cakes" features a number of cake recipes from all sorts of renowned chefs. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, and get out your mixer to create any of these fun, delicious treats. 3) Omnomicon (via Hostess With the Mostess) shows us how to make a rainbow cake - talk about things lookin' bright and 4) Bakerella really makes her cakes pop with her cupcake bites.

Or maybe you're feeling a little non-traditional? Why not serve something other than a birthday cake, but equally as festive?

1) A macaron tower from Bobbette and Belle makes a great centerpiece. Those little morsels not only make a great statement, but they are tre chic, too. 2) For the child, or the child at heart, cupcakes are always a winner. In my mind, the Beverly Hills-based Sprinkles was responsible for bringing that phenomena back into vogue, but they don't mail their cupcakes. (If you aren't in market where there is a Sprinkles retail location, you can order the mix online here.) 3) Eleni's is no newcomer, but they continue to create beautiful frosted cookies (my personal favorite). And they deliver all over the good ole US of A. 4) Finally, why not order up a truly personalized cake for you or your beloved? The Louis Vuitton purse created by JustCakes is perfect for the little fashionista.

To top it all off...
Wedding cakes aren't the only cakes that get to have toppers. In addition to a huge variety of cakes (or cake-like alternatives as the case might be), there's also a slew of things to put on top of your dessert.

1) Kill two birds with one stone with these fork candle holders from Fred Flare. 2) Sparklers made especially for cakes are festive and bright. Find them here. 3) How cute are these personalized candles? (I double checked. They don't have "Golly," but maybe you'll have better luck finding your name.) 4) Smarmy Pants has some of my favorite cake accessories - many of which are vintage-y and sweet. It's Birthday Week

In honor of my birthday, I thought I'd do a series of all things birthday related. Every day this week, I'll be posting something having to do with birthdays. (And just to note, while I love celebrating other people's birthdays, I'd rather just enjoy my day versus having a big hoopla. Don't get me wrong, I love my life, but I just don't find it necessary to make a big deal about another year.)

To start things off with Birthday Week, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on the birth of a baby and how to share the joyous news when he or she has arrived. Rattle-N-Roll was introduced to me by my friends, Clay and Elizabeth, via their adorable baby announcement that I received in today's mail. (Thanks, guys.)

Do You See What I See?

Have you ever wondered how to create the same color within different applications - say, create a pink paint that perfectly matches a pink fabric?

You'll likely use the Pantone system, a system that standardizes colors. In doing so, different manufacturers in different locations can all refer to the Pantone system to make sure colors match without direct contact with one another.

One of the more interesting things the company produces is called the PANTONE VIEW Colour Planner. It predicts specific trends 18-24 months prior to a specific season and shows designers how to strategically apply those trends to their products and goods based on color.

Though this was published months ago, I thought it would be interesting to look at what Pantone's summer predictions are since today is the first day of summer. The Spring/Summer 2009 edition focuses on "independence," and is interpreted in seven palettes. One can expect to find these color trends reflected in several design areas including women’s wear, menswear, active wear, cosmetics, interiors, industrial design and graphics (via Pantone):

Female-ism: medium pastels with a tinge of retro glamour
Classic-ism: almost devoid of color except for one medium blue accent
Independent-ism: tart, bold and gregarious colors
Today-ism: deep, dark shades of reddish blues and brown
Absurd-ism: combines disproportionate color hues and values
Fetish-ism: "a carnal inspiration and desire for experimentation"
Surreal-ism: "plays with scale, combination and expectation to create unexpected, and even strange, creations"

Yes, you say, but what exactly are those colors? See below for a few of the examples.

1 Dress, 365 Days

Can you imagine wearing the exact same dress, every day, for a full year? You heard me: the same dress for 365 days. Well, that's what Sheena Matheiken pledged to do starting this past May.

The Uniform Project was inspired by Sheena's childhood experience of wearing uniforms to public school in her native India. She has fond memories of her and her friends bending the rules a bit to accessorize their uniforms, thereby making a big personal statement. (Isn't this the case with so many uniform totting kids across the globe?)

What is more important to her, though, is bringing attention to the faulty education system in India. In doing this, she's also helping to raise money for the Akanksha Foundation, an organization that is dedicated to bringing education to slum children in India.

How's she going to do it? Sheena and a friend designed one dress that can be worn several different ways: frontwards and backwards, as a dress or a jacket, in the spring or the winter, etc. She's allowed to accessorize her "school uniform" under one condition: all things she wears with it must come from ebay. She's taking sustainable fashion to a whole new level.

I've been waiting for my neighborhood beauty supply store to get in Essie's 2009 Neon Collection. Well... the colors have finally arrived!

My nails are gonna be hot, hot, hot in funky limelight, flirty fuchsia, punchy pink and perky purple - just in time for the really steamy weather only a South Texas summer can bring. (I'm currently sporting the purple on my fingers and lime on my toes.) Find yours now at a local shop or online at Essie.

Though the neon trend was re-introduced on the runways during the Spring 2008 shows, it hasn't quite made it's way out yet. Neons are the colors for this summer and can be found all over the place. Now, I'm not suggesting that you should wear head to toe neon, but a little here and there certainly won't hurt. Mix it in with your basic blacks and whites for a sophisticated (yet playful) look.

I recently posted some images of motivational prints and posters of a different kind. I liked them because they were good reminders to get things done sans the corny and sentimental language. (I guess I'm not one for those kinds of messages.) There may have been a time and place for those but we've moved on. (Well, some of us have.)

Check out a similar set of statements: Mary Kate McDevitt's motivational chalkboards. In addition to being well-designed, there is an opportunity to change or update them on an as needed basis. (These images have made their way around the blog world, but I thought they were appropriate for modern girls everywhere.)

In talking about Lila's Sip and See, it made me think about some of my favorite event planners/stylists. I've only listed a few - there are tons more out there - but I am especially envious of the talent represented below.

Amy Atlas
Amy Atlas owns and operates an event planning company out of NYC. Though she and her staff are capable of handling all aspects of your special event, it is her dessert tables that make an ultra sweet presentation.

Her work has been featured in all sorts of mags like In Style Weddings, Food and Wine and Biz Bash, as well as online outlets such as DailyCandy.

Rebecca Thuss
While you may not know Rebecca Thuss by name, you've certainly seen her work. As a Martha Stewart Omnimedia veteran (she was employed by the craft maven for 10 years), she's had plenty of experience in making things beautiful.

To say that she is simply a "stylist" would be vastly incomplete. No, Ms. Thuss is not only a stylist, but a photographer, a crafter, a creative director and a wedding planner.

And as if that wasn't enough, she and her husband also own ThussFerrell, a graphic design firm specializing in web design, branding and corporate identity.

Livia Cetti
Another Martha Stewart veteran, Livia Cetti is now the co-owner of The Green Vase in Santa Monica, CA. She is a highly skilled floral designer, photo stylist, crafster and event planner.

Though Livia runs The Green Vase with her mother, lucky for us she is still a Contributing Editor at Martha Stewart Weddings (which means that we still have access to her gorgeous work).

Sip and See: Lila Stuart

The reason I went to Boston last week was to help my sister. She's got an adorable 2-year old (Eleanor Louise) and just had her second beautiful baby girl (Lila Stuart) two months ago. My Mom and I threw a Sip and See for the new baby this past weekend and I thought - as the proud aunt and older sister - that I would help my sis travel back home with those babies.

This Sip and See has been in the works practically since my sister announced she was pregnant (at the start of her second trimester). While my Mom was responsible for putting the actual party together, I was responsible for designing the invitations.

I had such a great time thinking about what to design. I knew the invites had to be dainty, pink, somewhat old-fashioned, but still contemporary enough to feel fresh. Here's what we ended up with:

It was a side fold card. "Sweet pea" on the cover was inspired by the month of April's official flower. The color pink was a given and the color green was a natural fit. They were printed via letterpress by Inky Lips Letterpress on a beautiful thick, cotton-y cardstock by Crane's. (And the napkins we had done as an extra touch.)

The party decorations were a huge hit, too. My Mom had traveled to Mexico during this past winter and picked up several sets of darling plastic starburst streamers. Strung from the middle of the ceiling and secured at four corners with huge bunches of roses and lilies, it was a magnificent site. It felt a little like being in the middle of a striped carousel.

Underneath the middle of the ceiling, we placed a white, three-tiered cake with "Lila" written around each layer. The cake was placed on my Mom's cake plateau which was then placed on the pink striped tablecloth that was used for the bride's cake at my sister's wedding.

In addition to the cake, we served a variety of finger sandwiches, strawberries with creme fraiche, melon wrapped in prosciutto and homemade cheese sticks. Glasses of white wine and frozen pink lemonade with fresh mint leaves were passed. And a Mexican coffee bar was the perfect compliment to the cake.

The honoree, Lila, wore gold beads and one of her mother's baby dresses. Her sister, Ellie, was resplendent in her pink striped dress, her maternal grandmother's gold beads and her mother's pint-sized white gloves. All of the other female family members wore a beautiful combination of pink and white, while the gents dressed in blues and khakis.

All in all, it was a grand affair on so many levels. We are blessed with a healthy and happy family and live in a wonderful community of friends.

Lisa Bengtsson

Like so many creatives I'm already drawn to (e.g., the designers of Odd Molly and Swedish Hasbeens), Lisa Bengtsson hails from Sweden. She's a highly talented pattern designer and graphic artist.

Some of my all time favorite wallpaper was designed by Lisa. It's called "Familjen" ("The Family") and is based on how families frame and share special moments, thereby creating lifelong memories.

I'd love to see this in my hallway.

Of course, she's got a few others that I think are pretty divine, too.

Returned from Boston

As you may recall, I went to Boston for a quick trip. I've just returned and while I didn't have a chance to get out much (more on that later), I wanted to share with you a few (and rather random) shots from my trip.

Luckily, I've the opportunity to visit Boston before, so I've seen many of the sights (walked the Freedom Trail, visited the Children's Museum, ate in Faneuil Hall, toured the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum, shopped on Newbury Street, etc.). Like I mentioned above, though, this wasn't a sight-seeing trip. Even so, there were a few things that always make an impression on me when I visit.

One of the obvious things to love about Boston is the historic feel of the city. (Down in Texas, we don't have 'dem cobblestone sidewalks, red brick buildings, alley gardens and brownstones with grand doorways.) It feels so intellectual. Nor do we have the delightfully cool and overcast weather in June that I enjoyed while I was there. (I finally get why companies like J.Crew and L.L. Bean manufacture sweaters and cords in the summer.) And finally, there are so many city parks available for public use. In addition to the luscious Boston Common, there are tons of smaller, well-maintained and child-friendly places to take a stroll, hop on a slide or simply pass through on the way to work.

I'll be returning next week for another 48 hour stay, so I'll try for a more well-rounded group of images at that time! In the meantime, if you haven't been to Boston, it really is a delightful city and I highly recommend a visit.

I'm sorry for not posting anything today, but I've been with the GrayBear all day. It's been a great summer day full of swimming and playing.

I leave you with a picture of the GrayBear (right) and his friend, Cis-co-bob. It's from our trip to the beach over Memorial Day weekend.

I feel overjoyed seeing my son so happy and having such fun. It's a good reminder that life is short, they grow up fast and we should cherish every moment with good friends and family.

Like White on Rice

Holly @ Decor8 wrote about Rice a couple of weeks ago. I came across another posting about the company again today while I was online, but I seemed to have forgotten where. Unfortunately, I can't properly credit that other blogger (sorry!), but I figured it was a sign to share a post about them with my readers.

Rice is a Danish store full of well-designed and colorful delights. Mostly homewares, it was started in 1998 in a garage by a Danish woman, her French husband and her Thai/Danish childhood friend. The company established its roots as fair trade certified and ten years later, this mantra still guides them.

It's reminiscent of things one might find at Anthropologie, but it goes one step further. It has that clean, high-design, Scandinavian feel that is so prevalent in products from Denmark and Sweden.

Simply looking at pictures of their products makes me feel like I'm a little girl in a candy store. And if you poke around the site long enough, you are sure to come across the stylized shots.

I love it when companies understand the importance of this type of branding. These shots (and actually making them available) can do wonders from a marketing standpoint. The images are not only fun to look at, but if they are good enough, the action practically guarantees that someone is going to mention them or write about them or buy from them.

Stamp It Up

The new postage rate went into effect a couple of weeks ago. (I'm especially aware of this because I've been helping my Mom address some things.) With every rate increase, I'm always curious to see what new designs the U.S. Postal Service is going to release.

I love a new opportunity to "dress" my mail with a beautifully designed stamp (or stamps). Check out the newest options for a $0.44 stamp, now required to mail a first-class letter in the United States.

You can also use the older $0.42 stamp as long as you don't forget to add an additional $0.02 accompaniment. Those options also make a nice statement.

Of course, you can still create your own custom stamp for that extra special occasion.

Miles Aldridge: Photographer

Karin Nelson at The New York Times wrote about British photographer Miles Aldridge today. I also came across a small blurb on nymag.com and after seeing his name twice this morning, I couldn't resist sharing some of his photographs.

Aldridge is a world-renowned fashion photographer. He's shot for the likes of Vogue Paris, Vogue Italia, American Vogue, The New York Times and Numero. His glossy images have also been featured in a number of different advertising campaigns from well-recognized design houses such as YSL, Armani and Lonchamp.

As I'm sure you will agree, his work is unique, thought-provoking and beautiful. His photographs are all staged, primarily because, he says, "...the world is just not being designed with esthetics as a priority. So I prefer to rebuild the world instead of photographing the real one."

He relies on his imagination to reset - if you will - the world as he would have it appear. His subjects then become characters on his set. It's a world according to Miles.

It appears as though he's got a keen sense for how to mix color (a la David LaChapelle) and movement (or lack thereof) into an exaggerated scene that makes you stop. And look. And think. Some of his images will awe, while others will scare, but through and through, they are gorgeous. (Check out more images here.)

Today's postings coincide with his new book, "Miles Aldridge: Pictures for Photographs." The book not only includes the finished photos, but also the manic-like drawings and sketches he does before a shoot. They act a bit like storyboards, each telling the story even before the actual picture is taken.

His work is also part of a new exhibit. Unfortunately for me, the exhibit is at the Steven Gasher Gallery in NYC until June 20 (and I'm not planning a trip to the Big Apple between now and then). For those of you fashionistas in the NY area, don't miss seeing these images in person. (The rest of us will have to drool over the pages of his book.)

Up, Up and Away

GrayBear's school ended on Thursday afternoon, so his summer officially started on Friday. As a celebration of him moving from Pre-K to Kindergarten, my Mom and I took him to see "Up," Pixar's newest animated 3D flick. (Hence the missing post on Friday.)

I had a loose idea of what the movie was about based only on the trailers: old man meets little boy who go on life-changing adventure together. I suppose I expected a few surprises along the way, but didn't anticipate anything above and beyond (no pun intended).

Boy, was I wrong. I was blown away by Up. The creators of the film do an incredible job with maintaining the important balance between a child and adult storyline, developing the wonderful characters, and unrolling a thoughtful and tender plot (I cried 4 times).

Up is not only good, it's great. If it's not yet on your to do list, this is a summer must see. Despite the already fantastic lineup of Pixar's dynamic portfolio (Ratatouille, Cars, Wall-E and Toy Story just to name a few), it's one of the award-winning animation studio's best.

Blue Star and Red Dot

The Blue Star Art Contemporary Center has been around since 1986. It formed out of a need to exhibit the work of a number of contemporary artists in and around San Antonio. In 1988, after being operated solely by volunteers for two years, a full-time Executive Director and staff was hired.

Today, Blue Star is one of San Antonio's leading contemporary art influencers. In addition to the 20+ exhibitions that are showcased each year, the Center is also responsible for helping to create Contemporary Art Month, a citywide celebration that now includes over 50 collaborating organizations.

Tonight, Blue Star will host Red Dot, their highly anticipated art sale. This is an opportunity for patrons to purchase contemporary art selected by San Antonio collectors and other Texas cities. What makes this something beyond just raising funds for Blue Star (though that's clearly an important aspect of it) is that fifty percent of the art sales from the evening go back to participating artists. It's a win-win for everybody.

In case you are in or around San Antonio tonight, it's not too late to purchase tickets at the door.

Come Give Me A {French} Kiss

I saw "Un baiser s'il vous plait" ("Shall We Kiss?") earlier in the week with my friend D. It's a quirky French comedy that explores the oft complicated relationships between men and women, but it goes one step further. (We already know that men are from Mars. Period.) Specifically, as the title of the movie implies, it explores the relationships between men and women that are oft even more complicated after a kiss is exchanged.

The exploration of the role of the kiss adds an interesting element. Instead of looking at the usual relationship pitfalls between men and women, the kiss, itself, is at the center of the plot.

What a complicated character, too, that kiss is! After all, a kiss isn't always a simple thing, for it has the power to transform relationships. While it can be a plain token of affection between - say - mother and child - it also has the dichotomous power to begin or end a relationship, intensify or bore an attraction, enchant or ruin a connection.

This plot is full of twists and turns that will keep you entertained and curious for more. It relies on hilarity, irony, sadness, deception and truth to tell its tale, one that comes full circle by the end of the story (and yet - in a funny way - it still leaves things open for interpretation).

The lesson for me? "A kiss is still a kiss" no matter how you dish it out.

Wool and the Gang

The mother's day gifts that I ordered for my Mom and Godmother FINALLY arrived!

It was so fun watching my Mom open her gift. As a knitter who is rediscovering her skills, she absolutely loved the knitting kit I got her from Wool and the Gang in the UK. (This, of course, made me so very happy!) Luckily, I was with her when she received it, so I was able to document the goods and see how they were packaged.

Let me just say that the whole thing is gorgeous. As you can see from the pictures below, the kit arrived in a white paper kraft bag. A sample of the peruvian yarn included in the kit served as the tie to a picture of what she was going to be creating.

Upon opening it, there were a number of things that I didn't expect to see. In addition to the beautiful knitting needles and fuchsia yarn, there was also a few iron-on patches, a package of smaller needles, instructions and a lookbook full of entertaining images (e.g., a dog covered in a knitted scarf).

I first discovered Wool and the Gang from DailyCandy. I also referenced it in one of my Mother's Day gift suggestion postings, but had no idea what to expect when I ordered the kits. Let me just say... this will not disappoint. It's the perfect gift or Do-It-Yourself project. (And given that it's May, you've got plenty of time to finish a new scarf before winter arrives.)

Hmmmm... perhaps a Christmas present for a loved one? After all, it's never too early to start that kind of shopping.

Just A Hint

Paris Hilton. Lindsay Lohan. J. Lo. Madonna. Those women have a lot in common. Besides their so-called “status,” celebrity-hood, drama, public break-ups and divorces, there’s another common characteristic that they all share: lash extensions.

Eyelash extensions were created in Asia, but soon moved their way west in the early 2000s. What started out as a celebrity-focused business has quickly turned into a consumer-focused industry. Salons – both large and small – are now offering the service as readily as they might offer a hair color treatment.

The process is simple, really. An individual synthetic lash is actually bonded to your real lash. In any given session, there are probably 50-75 lashes per eye applied. And unlike other beauty treatments, this isn’t harmful to your own lashes and it certainly doesn’t prohibit your real lash from growing. It just gives you an ultra sexy and flirty look year round.

Does it really work? YES! Pictures say it louder than words so I’ll just give you the visual proof:

And for the more adventurous consumer, there are even some companies that have colored lashes.

Sounds good, but what’s the damage? First time applications can run anywhere from $250 to $500, while refills run anywhere from $35 to $100. All of this, quite frankly, usually depends on your geographical location (it’s more expensive in LA and NY than it is in SA).

Having indulged in the luxury myself, I can pass along a bit of advice:

It’s important to go with someone who has a bit of experience with this process. Be leery of specials that sound too good to be true.
Make sure that they are applying individual lashes and not small clumps. While clumps can be effective for one night, for example, they won’t last as long as the individual lashes.
Be prepared to maintain them. In order for them to look their best, you have to take care of them and have regularly scheduled visits with your Lash Specialist. (I’ve got a great one, so let me know if you are interested. I’m happy to pass along her information.)

The newest fashion in beauty, this trend has even endured the recession. Companies who manufacture lashes are reporting record-breaking profits.

I recently came across "Operation NICE" (you'll notice the tag on the left sidebar of my blog). As the title indicates, it is a blog that is dedicated to the advancement of - drum roll please - people being nice to one another. Who'd have thought that an entire blog could be about being nice?!

Well, it can... and it exists. Founder Melissa Morris Ivone got the idea after someone held an elevator door for her. "If everyone was a little nicer to the folks they encountered each day," she thought, "perhaps the world would be a more pleasant place."

Indeed.

The blog is a sweet interpretation of what being nice means. You'll find encouraging stories of other people being nice, as well as a few weekly suggestions of ways that you, too, can be nice. (One of my favorite tips was to leave change in the change returner on a vending machine so that someone else can enjoy a treat.)

It's a simple concept, really, and it's so easy to implement. Look someone in the eye. Buy a friend lunch. The next time you say "have a nice day," actually mean it.

Whatever you do, just be nice. It's what every modern girl would do.

Tracy Feith Hits Target

This past Sunday, Target launched it's newest GO International limited-edition designer collection, Tracy Feith.
Texan-born (aren't all the good looking guys), Tracy started designing his own skate clothes in the 80s. Upon entering art school, he was encouraged to take fashion classes and thus began his now 20+ year old career as a designer.

Now an avid surfer, his style is said to be "Bohemian luxury" - perfect for the beach or the red carpet. Made and sold in Manhattan, he's also got 3 other independent stores (in Brooklyn, the Hamptons and LA). His line can also be found in a few other high-end boutiques across the US (prices range from around $800 to $2000 and up).

Lucky for us common folk, Tracy has teamed up with Target to create a less expensive line. Girly, flirty, bouncy and cute - this line ranges from $15 to around $140. (I'd say those prices are more in line with a - uh - real "bohemian" girl.)

What is a hasbeen?

A hasbeen has been inspired by other hasbeens throughout the ages.

Look at the hasbeens of the 1970s, for example. Gender equality took center stage. The Vietnam War prompted deadly demonstrations from anti-war protesters. Mandatory busing to achieve racial school integration threatened our educational process.

Change. Revolution. Evolution.

The designers of Swedish Hasbeens’ have taken note of historic times like these. They know that sometimes you have to move backward to be able to move forward. That’s why they’ve introduced us to their line of toffels (aka clogs).

Today’s designs are based on those original 70’s models that changed and inspired so many. They’ve been updated, though, with ecologically prepared natural grain leather, a material that’s nicer to people, as well as to Mother Earth. And that can only mean one thing: these Hasbeens are so Must-Haves.

Farm to Market

I had a great weekend. On Saturday morning, I went to the Pearl Farmer's Market that I referred to on Friday. It was a terribly muggy, hot morning, but that didn't stop the crowd from gathering downtown to attend the Grand Opening.

Fruits, veggies and meats galore - the Market was filled with beautiful colors and activity. There were only about 20 or so vendors, and many of them had run out of their supplies within the first 30 minutes!

Chef Andrew Weissman and his colleague, Luca, were on hand to do a cooking demonstration. Weissman is in the final stages of opening one of his newest spots, Il Sogno (The Dream), in the Full Goods building (immediately adjacent to the Farmer's Market). Opening is currently slated for June. (Now those are two guys that have got it going on - handsome, successful, charming, intelligent and both have beautiful families. Their beautiful wives are both customers at my store.)

I'd say that the Pearl organizers have some structural challenges to work through. The flow didn't move in a natural direction and it was so crowded that people were uncomfortable and complaining. For a first time execution, though, I'm not sure that they could've done it any differently. There are just too many variables that are difficult to predict without a trial and error grace period.

This was also my first glance at the River Improvement project. They had just filled the spot with water, so things are really coming together.

If Saturday was any indication of the future growth of this endeavor, it is well on its way. This entire project is going to do wonders for the Alamo City.

Local Harvest

For those of us who have grown up in San Antonio, we know that the Pearl Brewery has been a landmark building for 125+ years. Though it stopped producing beer in 2001, it's now famous sign and beautiful buildings have remained a part of downtown's landscape.

In 2002, it was acquired by Silver Ventures and thus began its transformation. The Pearl Stables (an event hall), the Aveda Institute and Texas Farm to Table were among the first businesses to go into the compound, followed by Melissa Guerra, one of the newest tenants. There are several other exciting things happening down there - the San Antonio River Improvements project, new restaurants, office and residential space, The Culinary Institute - but I will have to save these other treasures for a separate post and focus on the task at hand! (There's simply too many exciting things to discuss...)

The reason I write today is to let you know about the Pearl Farmer's Market. The Grand Opening is this Saturday, May 16th (tomorrow) from 9 am until 1:00 pm and it's going to be incredible.

I've only been to a handful of Farmer's Markets in my lifetime, so I'm definitely not an expert on this subject. However, I can say that the concept for this one is really cool. All vendors plant, raise and harvest all of their goods, so you can be sure that it's the real, downhome thing. Even more impressive? All vendors must come from within 150 mile radius of San Antonio. That's means its all local. (As a small business owner, I believe that supporting your local vendors is a great way to give back to your community.)

In addition to plenty of things such as fresh produce, potted herbs, baked goods, fish and meats, there will be a cooking demonstration by one of San Antonio's true gems, Andrew Weismann, the star chef from Le Reve, Bigz, and Sandbar. Local band, Emory Quinn, or EQ as they are called by their fans, will also perform. Finally, you can even purchase a ticket for a seat at MesAllegre, the chef's table where all meals are prepared using items pulled directly from the market.

From here on out, there will be a Farmer's Market every Saturday - come rain, shine, snow or sleet. Put this on your calendar. This is not to be missed.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

I've made some major and significant changes in my life in the last 5 years. Thankfully, most of them have been for the better.

I'm still wanting to change certain areas of my life, but I find myself paralyzed, at times, by a number of obstacles such as fear of failure, perfectionism, negative thinking - even laziness. While I like to think of myself as a go-getter, I also have to realize that I am human and therefore, am not perfect. Admittedly, that's a hard one for me to digest sometimes.

Maybe if I look at the mini posters below everyday, I'll find the inner gumption to take action and make the changes I need to make. They sure beat the dust collectors you might find in your doctor's office that's looked the exact same since 1982.

Customers at Galeana tell me that part of what makes my store so appealing is that I carry several - what they call - "different designers." It's the "stuff that you don't see everywhere."

Personally, I take this as a compliment. I like that I take risks and push my customers to step outside of their comfort zone a bit. You can go anywhere to buy a white tshirt and jeans, and while I also carry a few of those basics, I tend to lean towards stuff that - well - you don't see everywhere. The lines I carry are more unique.

Having said that, I feel like it's my responsibility to know a little bit about these independent designers. So I thought it would be interesting to share the dish with you. It's about them and by them. If successful, perhaps this will turn into a regular series.

Today's Designer Dish is with Amy Tan. Her line, Amy Tangerine, is filled with embroidered goodness. Mostly women's and baby/children's tees (there are a few accessories), it's sweet, fresh and easy to enjoy.

Below is a bit more about Amy:

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I am 30 years old and an only child. Born and raised in Chicago until I was 15, I moved to Atlanta and lived there for 10 years, and currently I have been in Los Angeles for 5 years. I enjoy traveling and being on-the-go, but can also be happy staying at home being crafty. My two Jack Russell Terriers, Buster and Bamboo, keep me on my toes at all times.

How did you start your business?
It started basically by accident 7 years ago. I asked my mom to teach me how to crochet so that I could make arm warmers for outdoor photo shoots (I was working as a fashion stylist at the time). After wearing them into a store opening party, the owners asked if I could make them some to sell in the store. I delivered them and sold a pair right out of the bag. Three hours later, they called me and said half of them had already sold. After some press and selling to a few more stores, springtime came and I decided to hand embroider some tank tops. Fred Segal picked them up and a few months later Cindy Crawford was photographed in Glamour Magazine wearing one of them. At that point I decided I might have a business and flew to NY for my first big tradeshow.

How have you kept things fresh?
I travel a lot and seek inspiration of all kinds, whether it be from daily life, nature, people or different places, I try and keep an open mind and not follow trends too closely. I just make what I like.

Who are some of your favorite designers?
I love the lines Corey Lynn Calter, Notice, Rebe and Robin's Jeans.

Where else do you get inspiration?
I love crafting, and seeing cute cards and paper products is really inspiring. I think it translates well onto positive and fun tee shirts.

What advice would you give someone looking to start a new business?
I think it's important to take things slowly and day by day. The big ideas are wonderful, but stick to what is true in your heart. Also, get advice from a couple mentors, seek wisdom from them and always be willing to learn from mistakes. I've learned new things every day, and am grateful for those lessons.

If you're going to be a modern girl, you must get in on the blog scene. What exactly is a blog? Short for weblog, it's an electronic version of a journal. The subject matter is up to the blogger, so as you can imagine, there are tons of blogs out there about tons of different subjects.

Part of what makes blogging so appealing to me is the fact that one can tie to so many other blogs. It's sort of part of the blogging world, actually, and it goes along with the territory. At its core essence, it's what social networking is all about.

I was recently encouraged to share some blog love, but instead of focusing on the always brilliant "usuals" like design*sponge or decor8, I thought I'd highlight a few of my recent favs:

The Pioneer Woman: Move over, Martha. Meet The Pioneer Woman. A true pioneer woman, indeed, Ree Drummond does all sorts of incredible things. She lives on a working cattle ranch with her husband and 4 kids where she cooks, photographs, homeschools, blogs... and those are just a few of her daily chores. Not only does she do ALL that, she does it with beauty and perfection. This woman is my new hero (and her sweet rolls are to die for as was attested to in my Mother's Day Brunch post).

Feather Your Nest: FYN is operated by two women who know style. Miss Bleecker lives in Forth Worth and Miss Byrd lives in Savannah. Both have backgrounds in event planning (among other things), but their experience goes far beyond getting the logistics together. They are experts in the things that can really make or break a special occasion: flowers, linens, stationary/invitations, and photography. (As a side note, they also have a blossoming retail presence in Fort Worth called Byrd + Bleecker.)

Style Rookie: Meet Tavi. A lover of Bob Dylan and C.S. Lewis. A fan of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "A Night at the Roxbury." A devotee of Comme des Garcons and Alexander McQueen. A stylish and intelligent Londoner, indeed.

It's rude to speak about someone's age, but in this case, you'll have to excuse me. You see, Tavi is 13! Yes, she's 13 and she's the most sensational 13-year old I've ever come across.

Darling, quirky and eccentric, she has a respectable style of her own that is well-documented on her blog with daily pictures of what she's wearing, what she's doing, what she's listening to, who she's following, etc. Some might say that Tavi is wise beyond her years, but one of the most appealing aspects of her life is that one can still see the child within. She's still attractively innocent (she prefers chocolate pudding over vanilla).

State of Play

I saw “State of Play” a few days ago. It’s an entertaining flick with big name actors (including Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Helen Mirren and Rachel McAdams). An engaging plot, it’s a great date movie.

The movie aside, I was reminded of the role music plays when creating a soundtrack for a movie, television series or commercial. I got thinking about this because there was a Creedence Clearwater song that played during the credits.

I couldn’t help but think what a perfect match it was for the movie. The voice, the beat, the guitar. They captured so much of Russell Crowe's character in that one song - even long before that character had been created. So what did I do? I went home and downloaded – not only the song – but the entire CC album - off of iTunes (and I’m definitely not the biggest CC fan). A great example of successful product placement (but that's another story).

There are lots of other times when this has happened. Music has gotten me excited about something or inspired me to do something new - even if it's simply to find an old CD or download music. Call it a "state of play." It's a state of playing music. Some of my favorite "states" have come about through soundtrack or broadcast associations. It's sort of feels like an aha moment - even if I haven't actually figured something out. I've simply rediscovered something I'd forgotten about... or discovered a "new" thing that's actually old.

In keeping with that theme, I thought I’d share a few of those "states" that stuck with me. (I apologize for the small type. Click on the image to enlarge it):

Mother's Day Brunch

I feel like I have exhausted Mother's Day, but I have only one more post that I thought you'd be interested in: my Mother's Day brunch. I thought you might find some ideas for something you might be planning in the future (since it's certainly something that could work for multiple occasions).

My menu was inspired by none other than Mom. I knew I wanted to do a brunch that would be 1) homemade, 2) really tasty and 3) not terribly difficult (that detail was for me). I used two different resources to come up with my final menu: fresh squeezed orange/grapefruit juice, eggs in ham cups (from Gale Gund's Brunch), steamed asparagus, fresh watermelon chunks and two variations of sweet rolls (orange marmalade and cinnamon, both from the extremely talented The Pioneer Woman).

On Day One, I set the table. I got out my formal china, crystal and silver - all of which rarely gets used (unfortunately). I used my grandmother's monogrammed linen napkins which were the perfect contrast to the large, green leaves I used for the placemats.

Then, I made a beautiful centerpiece from hydrangeas, ranunculus, carnations (yes, I used carnations) and stock. The flower arrangement I made last week (of hydrangea, ranunculus, peonies and stock) still looked pretty good - I changed the water and replaced a hydrangea - so I left that in the kitchen. I put tulips on my mantel. My precious GrayBear sent me red roses which I placed in the living room.

I also made the dough for the rolls which sat covered in the fridge overnight.

Day Two started promptly at 7:00 am. I rolled out the dough and made the rolls. The first batch was made with sugar and cinnamon and topped with plain sugar frosting (not maple as the recipe called for). The second batch was made with orange marmalade and brown sugar and made with orange sugar frosting.

While the rolls were baking, I prepared the ham and poached egg cups. These delicacies were prepared with ham, eggs, pesto, mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes and they are yummy. My Mom steamed the asparagus while my Dad nibbled on the watermelon.

The meal, itself, was very tasty. The sweet rolls were the big hit, but the eggs came in a close second. Overall, everyone was very pleased with the results. This in and of itself makes for a most happy hostess!

All in all, it was a great way to spend Mother's Day. Now it's time for a nap...

Happy Mother's Day

My Mom found this in the New York Times several years ago. (I don't remember the exact year or source, but it may have been part of an ad.) She had me transcribe it onto a piece of paper so that she could make copies and distribute it to friends and family members. Ever since, my brother, sister and I have received a copy - without fail - on Mother's Day.

Here's another version that I created. As you will note, the perspective has been altered a bit. I wonder... have you ever heard anything similar to the sentiments below?

I am, indeed, lucky to have a Mom that says all of these things... and more.

NOTE: I don't want my Mom to come across as some aloof airhead. She is anything but. I should have mentioned that my Mom is a very bright, intelligent and well-read woman. Some of her sayings above aren't always serious.

Renowned Artist Appearance @ Saks Fifth Avenue

One of my favorite American artists from my generation is Waddy Armstrong and these days, it appears as though I'm not alone. After all, it was his artwork that inspired the Saks Fifth Avenue 2009 Mother's Day Catalogue. (I mean, I feel like I know a celebrity.)

If you've seen any of Waddy's pieces, you will surely agree that they are both organic and modern in a most fashionable manner. He paints a botanical series using "hybridizing" - a term he coined to mean "the creation of visual elements from different plants and trees that are combined within a single composition." His works draw inspiration from the pure beauty of nature, but include a modern interpretation of what is real. It's natural - say - with a twist.

Waddy grew up in San Antonio, but attended the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design in 1999. He's moved around a bit (his past includes a stint in New York), but returned to Texas to settle down a few years ago.

He and his family now call San Antonio home (again), but Waddy is anything but "settled down." In addition to meeting the demands of various galleries, art shows and individual collectors across the country, he's also drummed up a steady corporate following. The new Hyatt Hotel in downtown San Antonio is one of many businesses lucky enough to have some of his paintings.

As a friend (and a fan), I can tell you that Waddy is not only a seriously talented artist, but also an incredibly nice guy. Don't you love seeing friends and acquaintances enjoy such great success in their lives? I sure do. (Well done, friend.)

Waddy will make a special appearance today (May 9) at Saks Fifth Avenue in San Antonio. Join the celebration from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. (If you are lucky, maybe he'll even give you an autograph.)

More Mother's Day, Final

It is Thursday today, so you've only got a couple more days before Mother's Day is here. I've already purchased my Mom and Godmother their gifts, but they are coming from across the Big Pond (the UK) and they haven't arrived yet. I'm not exactly thrilled about their delayed arrival, but I can't do too much about it either. I thought I'd share this simply because perhaps my anxiety might motivate all of you who wait until the last minute to go ahead and get something together.

As you continue to ponder the perfect gift, my final category of gift suggestions are inspired by the "Queen Bees." While I believe that there are many mothers out there who deserve to be treated like Queens - especially on Mother's Day - let's not confuse these suggestions with that notion. In this instance, the term "queen" is used to describe those mothers who love luxurious goods. "Luxury" can be defined in a few different ways, but this list is for the Mother's that have - well - slightly more expensive taste. (It's always nice to dream...)

The Craftster

I love to create. My mind is constantly aflutter with new ideas of what I could make or manufacture. It's easy for me to imagine myself as a modern day superhero-type craftster. "Faster than a sewing machine! Handier than a glue gun! Able to create beautiful ball gowns with a single stitch!" (I'd definitely have a pink cape.)

To all the creative, crafty Moms out there, these are great gift suggestions of projects she can do, things you can make for her, or adventures you can both partake in together!

And because many of them won't be immediately recognizable, I thought I'd explain each entry with a few more details than the earlier posts:

A homemade paper bouquet is cute and kitschy. Besides never wilting, one of the best things about this arrangement is that it comes in a kit. All of the materials are packaged together and there are specific directions for how to assemble it.
A picture book is a great thing for everyone to enjoy. I'm a diehard Mac user, so I'd use iPhoto to create one, but there are plenty of other services out there that can do it as well. (Try Snapfish, Shutterfly or Kodak.)
The craft revolution is upon us and this is, perhaps, most evident in the rise in popularity in activities such as knitting and crocheting. Why not knit your mom a scarf? Or have her knit one for you? Again, this neck warmer project from Wool and the Gang comes in a kit so it's all there for you to do or to give.
Amy Butler is an artist who lives in Granville, Ohio (also home to my alma mater, Denison University, by the way). She's created a hugely successful business with her sewing and textiles. Why not toss Mom a pillow or two from Amy Butler? Perfectly posh for the front porch swing.
Sublime Stiching was started by (almost local) Austinite, Jenny Hart. Inspired by her mother's creations, she began making easy to follow embroidery patterns - perfect for even the beginner stitcher. Embroid a cute scene on a handerchief or pillowcase and Mom is sure to cherish it forever.
For the novice sewer, Singer has created a darling purple sewing machine. It's a beginner's dream as it's loaded only with the essentials. A Mother's Day arrival will ensure enough time for a go at this year's Halloween costumes.
Why not give Mom a craft class? There are lots of local shops that offer a number of classes in different mediums. If you are in San Antonio, try the Southwest School of Art and Craft or Tres Rebecas (call 210.224. 5733 for more information).
"Handmade Hellos" is a fun book. Written by the two sisters and designers who own Hello! Lucky letterpress, they've compiled 25 craft ideas from various paper artists. Why not try your hand at creating a card for your Mom?

The Sugar Mama

Sugar usually gets such a bad rap, but an indulgent treat every once in a while isn't bad. There are so many sugary delights to chose from out there, so why not marry them with an fun gadget or accessory? It makes me want to have an old-fashioned tea party. "Coffee or tea? One lump or two?"

I think most of the things I've listed here are self-explanatory, but in case you don't recognize the Flip camera, this is one worth mentioning. The Flip is a video camera that is the size of an iPhone, so it fits in any purse. It's easy to use (we're talking one button to record) so even the most - ahem - technologically-challenged Mom can figure this one out. And it plugs directly into any computer (thankfully it's PC and Mac friendly) so video clips are ultra easy to share with grandparents, other family members and friends. Simply record, upload to YouTube and voila - you're done.

My Favorite Fashion Illustrators

I'm certainly not the first person to write about fashion illustrators - but DANG! - there are a few that I think are tremendously talented. Kat Macleod, Stinna Persson and Ruben Toledo are all included in that list. Their work never becomes old.

Kat Macleod is an Australian-based illustrator. She has a girly-girl feel, but still takes on a look that is both alluring and wonderful. Her work has been featured in pubs like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, but lucky for us, she's done the illustrations for a few books, "Like I Give a Frock" and "The Cocktail Book."

Another woman I've become a huge fan of is Stina Persson. A Swedish-based illustrator, Stina uses different mediums (watercolors, acrylics - even photos) to create her unmistakable look. She's worked with corporations like Coke, Absolut Vodka and Godiva, as well as editorials like Elle, Marie Claire and NYLON. Her works have an air of sophistication and glam to them that's hard to beat.

The last illustrator I'm going to feature today is Cuban-born Ruben Toledo. Toledo isn't only the husband of Isabel Toledo, the designer who dressed Michelle Obama at the inauguration. He is an artist and sculptor by his own right. Perhaps best-known for the national fashion ad campaigns he has done for Nordstrom, his illustrations are witty and immediately recognizable. You'd think Nordstrom would get on the ball and publish a book of all of his works, but alas, no such luck. Thank goodness he's taken matters into his own hand with Style Dictionary.

And if you just want a good reference to various fashion illustrators over the last century, look no further than 100 Years of Fashion Illustration. Author Cally Blackman does a great job of collecting a number of different works by several different illustrators.

There is a trend that seems to be getting lots of attention of late: free, downloadable e-mags. In light of all the problems that the newspaper and magazine industries are facing (sigh, our beloved Domino is officially a thing of the past), this concept is an interesting one to explore - not only from a consumer standpoint, but also from a business standpoint.

A few of my favorites are small (parent-focused out of the US), LMNOP (parent-focused out of Australia) and Parasol (style focused out of the US).* You can easily subscribe to them so that new issues simply pop into your email. Trust me, it's worth the few minutes it takes to fill in the subscription form.

Remember the anticipation you used to experience when you saw the new Domino? The ritual you created to view that awesome magazine? These ezines bring up those kinds of giddy practices. (Or am I the only one that acted like that with Domino?) They are rather inspirational, I'd say.

Just My Type

I'm fascinated with design of all types, but I have a current infatuation with graphic design.

My background is in marketing and advertising, so I'm no stranger to graphic design. However, I was on the account management and strategic sides. While I was always involved with "guiding" the creative process, I was never involved in actually creating the end use materials.

When I opened my store, I quickly figured out that if I was going to even begin to do the kind of marketing that I aspired to do in the long run, I'd have to figure out how to do some of the creative execution on my own. This was (still is) a daunting task. Many of the creative software programs are not terribly easy to learn. So I started off slow. Photoshop Elements became my friend... as did lots of different fonts.

Like I mentioned, I'm not a trained graphic designer, but I have been forced to learn Photoshop and Illustrator. This has led me to doing some (very minor) design. I have a few projects up my sleeve, so make sure and stay tuned to see how fonts can be applied to create beautiful things.

Time Killers

I use the Internet to do lots of things: research, shop, communicate, share, work, etc. In other words, I usually have a purpose when I'm online. Sometimes, though, I get sucked in without realizing how much time I've wasted. It's amazing what one can find, what one can tie into, what one can do on this thing we call the World Wide Web.

In thinking about ways I waste time online, I suppose I sort of categorize time wasters into three different buckets:

There are the good ole 'standby' sites like YouTube and Craigslist.org that will never get old (or so it seems).
Then there are those sites like Facebook and Twitter which I used to be into, but am fading away from, mainly because I feel like they are way too saturated. (We'll call those the 'faders.')
Finally, there are the 'newbies,' the sites that I've just recently come across and think are pretty cool. (Mind you, sites don't stay in this third category for long. They will eventually fall into one of the first two categories mentioned above!)

In keeping with the theme, I thought I'd introduce you to some of my 'newbies.' (You know... just in case you want to waste some time, too.)

PhotoFunia

PhotoFunia is a site that allows you to take your pictures of you or someone else and place them into real-life scenes. This site is going to be particularly entertaining for teenagers or some of your more - shall we say "narcisstic" - friends.

FOUND

The Finds section of FOUND Magazine is really entertaining. This group has collected found messages - notes, cards, drawings, receipts, ticket stubs - and created a massive collection of - well - things. Alongside each thing is also a note indicating who found it, where it was found and in what context. A new find is showcased each day.

Funny, sad, intimate, nasty, sweet, innocent - whatever the tone of the visual presented, the sentiments draw you in. It's like taking a peak into other people's lives. Before you know it, you are trying to figure out what the circumstances were to have produced such actions or communications.

PostSecret

Of the three sites I have listed here, this one makes me think the most. It's similar to FOUND, but in a much more controlled way. In the organizer's words, "PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard." The use of the word "secrets" is an understatement. Think more along the lines of "confessionals."

Galeana: Out and About

One of my favorite parts about being a shop girl is helping women finds things that they look and feel great in. I mean, let's face it. When we look good on the outside, we carry ourselves differently - we project an air of confidence - that makes us feel great on the inside.

I'm lucky enough that sometimes, I get to see some of these women on the streets in what they've purchased and it solidifies that feeling for me even more. I see them, full of confidence and looking great. It makes me feel like a Mother Hen of sorts.

So, I had an idea. I'm going to try and feature women out and about - dressed in clothes they've purchased from Galeana. I think the idea of seeing these women in everyday situations - looking good and feeling confident - is nice. Too, I always like to see how others have accessorized themselves to create different looks. Maybe it'll give you some ideas?

A Lofty Vision

We, in San Antonio, are flooded by tacky strip centers. You know the type. They are the ones that boast the huge chains that are too often associated with "America."

Now don't get me wrong. While I'm as big of a Target fan/shopper as the next Joe, I am NOT married to the development that occurs around most Targets. The centers feel dismal. They tend to be too big and over-developed and there is always an endless amount of concrete. It feeds into one of the things I don't like about our country: excess. And as a small business owner, it's hard to watch those kinds of things popping up all over the place.

So you can imagine my surprise when I came across something in a strip center just west of the airport that actually caught my eye: Aloft.

A Starwood property, Aloft is W Hotels sister chain that answers the call for high design and low cost. And, based on looks alone, it's pleasantly ... well, cool.

Though we weren't able to see a room - they were at 100% occupancy - we took a few shots of the lobby, bar and outside seating area. Take a look.

Like most Ws, Aloft feels contemporary, youthful and intelligent. There is a sophisticated drinking bar on one side of the lobby, and a healthy, clean snack bar on the other side. There are two seating areas and a pool table inside, and a small pool with two different seating areas outside.

In addition, it has some of the extra amenities that some of the other chains of this type lack: a small gym, wireless internet, flat screen TVs in all rooms, and "emergency" supplies like a small Etch-A-Sketch and a game of CandyLand. The best part? The price is right. Rates start at $130.

Upon entering the hotel, the staff greeted us with a friendly, "Aloha." Apparently, this is a part of their marketing strategy (it's included in some of their promotional materials). I could do without this part, but the rest felt right on. I would definitely stay here.

Alofts are popping up all over the place (a second one in downtown San Antonio is scheduled to open in April 2011) and it looks like they are expanding all over the world - and fast. This is going to be an interesting development to watch.

Pretty, Sexy, Cool

Introducing Elizabeth Walker Carrington: a mother, snowboard enthusiast, graphic designer and, as you can see, a fine artist.

Elizabeth's pieces are colorful bits of pop culture. In her words, she marries two things that she loves - art and design - to create pieces that address materialism, superficiality and love.

"My work is a tribute to Andy Warhol's statement that Pop Art is about 'liking things.' The pieces are a blend of design and type, lyrics and images from popular culture all mixed, layered and silhouetted. They are loosely designed on a computer and then screenprinted on painted canvas and paper and touched up by hand. They want to be pretty, sexy, cool—vain with a bit of irreverence—but above all, Pop."

Though she's lived in a number of different places (including San Francisco), Elizabeth has finally settled in San Antonio with her husband and two adorable children. She's officially represented by Parchman Stremmel Galleries, but I'm lucky enough to be able to hang some of her paintings in the store for a short time. She will also be a part of the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center's Red Dot event on May 28, 2009 (more info on that at a later date).

Check out some of her work below. As usual, the internet doesn't do her justice, but I think you will agree that Elizabeth has strong talent and a great eye.

All I can say is YUM-MY.

An Egg-Cellent Idea

Cascarones have been a tradition of Fiesta since long before I was a child. Made of hollowed eggs filled with confetti, they are cracked on other people's heads as a fun (and often surprising) gesture. They are (usually) a fantastic and glorious treat for both 'cracker' and 'recipient.'

For such a small object, the cascarone evokes a huge affect. They are usually around when some sort of celebration is going on, so times are happy.

In San Antonio, cascarones are readily available on street corners, in shops and in local grocery stores starting around Easter time and going through Fiesta (the end of April). If you aren't lucky enough to be in South Texas during that time, you can easily make your own.

I'm sorry that I don't have visual directions to accompany this post, but the steps are very straightforward (albeit a bit messy). If you don't have access to a prepacked egg dye kit, you can easily make your own egg dye. See below for what else you'll need to get started.

Battle of the Blooms

Today is the Battle of Flowers Parade. The first one was held in 1836 in commemoration of the fallen soldiers at the Battle of the Alamo and the tradition is still going strong. Schools, banks and offices throughout San Antonio close so that residents and visitors alike can enjoy the day's festivities. There are a variety of participants: high school bands, musicians, members of community organizations, local celebrities, politicians and, of course, Fiesta royalty. It is a fun-filled, family-oriented event.

This is a great place to don a festive outfit. However, because of the hot sun and usually high humidity level, a fashionable and weather-appropriate ensemble can be challenging. Here's what I might put together (sunscreen and hat included).

Fiesta Continues

My second official Fiesta event of 2009 (part A) was the San Antonio Conservation Society's King's Party. It was held on Tuesday evening on the grounds of NIOSA.

King's Party

According to the Conservation Society's website, "NIOSA^® (pronounced "knee-oh-sa") is a four-night event that celebrates San Antonio's diverse cultural heritiage with 15 ethnic areas that serve fabulous foods in over 250 food booths and provides entertainment to over 85,000 revelers." The King's Party was actually held in an area that was sectioned off from the rest of NIOSA, but it was still right in the middle of things. I suppose it was a party within a party.

(So what's the connection between the two? Funds earned at NIOSA help operate the Conservation Society.)

The most exciting part of this party was seeing what the Old Guard of San Antonio had on. Most of the attendees were professionals - many seemed to be either architects, city employees, or developers. Professions aside, costumes were front and center for this occasion (and they were fantastically cool).

For someone that doesn't care for crowds (I mentioned that already), I sure braved 'em. My friend "D" and I made the rounds, said our hellos and goodbyes and left NIOSA in search of a quieter and calmer atmosphere. We walked a few blocks to Le Frite, a small Belgian bistro just south of downtown. This is where part B of my evening begins.

Le Frite

Owned and operated by one of San Antonio's leading chefs, Damien Vatel*, Le Frite is pleasing in a most understated yet tasteful manner. Chairs and tables one might find in a Parisian cafe create a romantic and warm environment in two intimate rooms. There is a small bar, used mainly for extra seating, and a large chalkboard menu above the kitchen. And while I'm certainly no food critic, I feel like I've been to enough places around the world to know what's good and what's not.
Le Frite is good. And consistently so. I ordered my favorite dish: the mussels/pommes frites. D ordered the steak/pommes frites, another delectable selection. We had dinner inside, but enjoyed coffee outside. The sun had set and it was much cooler by then.

For all those coming to San Antonio to visit (or for all those who want to venture out of their 'hood), remember Le Frite.

Earth on Earth Day

The new Disney movie, "Earth," opened today. I picked up GrayBear a little early from school and we hit the matinee.

"Earth" does a wonderful job of hitting a number of geological spots around the world. Footage was shot in over 200 locations in almost 70 countries including the frozen tundra of Antarctica, the dry Sahara dessert, and of course the ocean. It's very informative, too, but not in a boring way. (I didn't feel like a child begrudgingly watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom in the early 70s). While there isn't necessarily a plot, per se, we follow a few animal families on their own journeys of survival and see glimpses of other species along the way.

It is an intimate story that explores the natural cycle of life and death and how the changing environment is affecting that cycle.

My favorite part was, of course, the cinematography. They went to great measures to get the incredible footage that was required to make this something more than a science film. You learn a little bit about some of these extreme measures during the credits - only one of which was via a small hot air balloon two-seater.

The footage is absolutely breathtaking and the music score feels relevant and appropriate. As a reporter from the Chicago-Tribune wrote, it is "beautiful enough to forgive Disney for Hannah Montana: The Movie." Love it!

A note for parents: though there is no raw footage of animals being brutally ravished by their predators, death is definitely implied. My 6-year old felt sad and scared about some of those instances, so while it is G rated, it's still something to consider.

Happy Earth Day!

I am loving today. I am so proud of our country for making our planet a top priority. We've got a ways to go but with each passing year, I feel like we are making small steps. A sincere dialogue began a few years ago, but has finally gained enough momentum to affect change. As we enter into a new era for our country and the world, I'm proud to celebrate Earth Day 2009.

In honor of this occasion, I have decided to highlight a only a small few of my environmentally favorite finds.

The GrayBear and I try to read almost every night before bed. One of our favorite (and rather oversized) books is 365 Penguins. This hilarious story by Jean-Luc Fromental reminds us to be friendly to Mother Earth in a most creative fashion. The illustrations by Joëlle Jolivet are top-notch as well (all of you design buffs will recognize the modern color palette and mid-century design elements).

Another Earth Day shoutout has to do with a new shoe line to hit the market. Swedish Hasbeens bring the clog back in a most stylish and irreverent fashion. All materials are handcrafted using earth-friendly products: high grain leather (no chrome), Swedish alder wood and lime tree, and natural rubber. This means that the shoes, themselves, are sustainable and with proper care, are said to last forever (you can pass them onto your kids).

(I'm a devoted fan and retailer of Odd Molly, another Swedish line, so Swedish Hasbeens was a natural fit for my store, Galeana. Stylish and environmentally-friendly, these will be available at Galeana in May.)

Another favorite are drinking glasses made from recycled soda and water bottles. Sid St. Onge, a local San Antonio musician and artist, creates handmade glasses from the pretty vessels. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but my favorites are of the Topo Chico variety.

(Topo Chico is an imported sparkling water from Mexico. It's got some powerful carbonation so it's especially yummy. For a delightful summer treat, make your own simple syrup, add a cold Topo Chico, squeeze a lime and enjoy.)

Arts Fair and Charreada

While I'm not one for large and dense crowds, there are a few events that I don't like to miss. The first is the Fiesta Arts Fair sponsored by the Southwest School of Art and Craft (SWSAC). The second is the Charreada.

Fiesta Arts Fair

The SWSAC is a nationally recognized institution specializing in arts education. Courses are offered to adults and children in a number of different areas including ceramics, bookmaking, photography and many other specialties.

The Fiesta Arts Fair is only one of the several beautiful events that the SWSAC sponsors. Artists from all over the country and region are invited to showcase their works on the SWSAC grounds (a place that is a work of art in and of itself). When I say "invited," I mean that the artists are selected by a juried panel.

This is an event that has grown steadily during the last 36 years. According to their website, "San Antonio's Fiesta Arts Fair was named one of America's Top Ten Art Fairs and Festivals (coming in at #7, to be exact) by the national magazine, American Style."

One of my favorite parts this year was the Children's Art Garden (perhaps that because my little guy is 6 years old - the perfect age to enjoy this hands-on experience). There were a number of different craft stations where kids (and adults) could create their masterpieces. Clay sculptures, stained glass, monoprints, face painting, beading and quilling, metal repousse, art pots and Fiesta crowns were all part of the fun.

Let me just say... for all of you crafsters out there (me included), this was heaven!

The Charreada

The Asociacion de Charros de San Antonio hosts their annual Fiesta Charreada during the two Sundays of Fiesta. A charreada is what gringos often call a "Mexican Rodeo," but I suspect those who really know their stuff would say it goes much deeper than that. Seeped in Mexican art, tradition and culture, its roots date back to the time when the Spaniards first arrived in the Americas. It wasn't until the 1970s, though, when the Charreada was recognized as an official event in the US.

The event I attended began with a procession on horseback of the flags (American and Mexican). This is followed by an introduction of all of the participants on horseback. All are dressed in traditional costume and mariachi music plays in the background. It is a visual feast for the eyes and ears.

According to Wikipedia, a typical charreada consists of 9 events for men and 1 event for women. We only stayed for a few of the events (our younger companions were getting tired), but my favorite is the side saddle performance by the women. In this instance, a team of 8 or so young ladies created a number of different formations and patterns. Admittedly, its not their skill that is most impressive to me (though they are clearly highly skilled), but rather their costumes that I can't stop photographing. Their skirts flounce, their ribbons flow, their hats tip and their whips crack. It is is a breathtaking site.

Fiesta San Antonio

Everyone who has grown up in and around San Antonio knows about Fiesta. An 11-day event held every year in April, it's South Texas' answer to Mardi Gras. Parades, art fairs, food booths, music, cascarones, Kings and Queens - all of these elements (and more) come together to create what has to be one of the nation's greatest examples of a really great citywide festival.

I'll be posting information and pictures regarding a variety of events throughout the week. They will, by no means, be inclusive of every event, party or parade. The postings are only indicative of what I'm attending, where I'm going, what I'm seeing, etc. There is PLENTY more going on!

Oh By Gosh By Golly

My first post! This is very exciting.

I’ve been thinking about starting a blog for a while now, but insecurities on so many levels have prevented me from doing so.

Many of those insecurities exist – even as I write this first entry – but my gut tells me that I must simply start. I must pursue my extreme desire to share, connect, and create. So what can you expect from By Gosh, By Golly?

Here’s a glimpse…

I am a lover of fashionable things – especially those things associated with events, restaurants, apparel, design, interiors, food, architecture and art. Be it a tangible product or merely an idea, I believe that some of the most fashionable creations come out of these industries. That said I realize that “fashion” – though not always – can be driven by a trend. What is fashionable today may not be so fashionable tomorrow.

In order to live the good life that so many modern girls dream about, she must not necessarily be the trendiest girl on the block; rather, she must possess a voice of her own. The tricky part, though, is that this voice must make sense on the inside and the outside. This we call style.

Too, I think it's important for us to try new things every once in a while. We should be forced to step out of our comfort zone. Whether it's by going to see a new museum, attending a new event, trying a new restaurant, cooking a new recipe, engaging in a new morning ritual - these experiences present opportunities to grow. This we call self-awareness.

It is my hope that, in presenting you with my experiences with new restaurants, fun events, fashionable clothes, interesting ideas and exciting concepts, I can help you find, tweak or solidify your inner modern girl voice. For it is through this discovery that one may, indeed, live the good life.
